Alphonce J. Brown, Jr., ACFRE, believes strongly that his obligation to share his twenty-five years of fundraising experience in health, education and volunteer service with nontraditional nonprofit organizations is a personal and professional mandate. He also believes that the role philanthropy plays in the global marketplace is an increasingly important one. This passion comes from experiencing first-hand the need - and having worked with large traditional nonprofit organizations and grassroots organizations to promote efficient, ethical and effective fundraising. He currently is the director of development for the National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC), an association of more than 12,000 individuals and organizations addressing the AIDS epidemic among people of color in the United States.
Prior to NMAC, Brown was the vice president of development for the National Academy of Public Administration, an independent, nonpartisan organization chartered by Congress to assist federal, state and local governments improve their effectiveness and accountability. Other positions held by Brown include vice president of advancement of California State University, Dominquez Hills in Carson, California; executive director of the National Kidney Foundation of Southeast Texas in Houston, president & CEO of the Prairie View A&M University Foundation in Houston and Assistant Dean of External Relations, College and Graduate School of Business, University of Texas at Austin. Brown also is the principal of Docere Consulting, Inc., a consulting firm he founded in 2003, in Long Beach, California.
Brown received his Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) designation in July 2002 - a distinction held by only 85 senior fundraising professionals in the world. He is a frequent lecturer and teacher, and he has conducted workshops throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He is the Past Chairman of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), an international professional membership organization with more than 30,000 members worldwide. He also is an Advisory Board member of Philanthropy World magazine and serves on the Healthy Teen Network Board of Directors.
